National Problem Gambling Awareness Week

  The Delaware Council on Gambling Problems, in conjunction with the National Council on Problem Gambling, is pleased to present the 8th Annual Problem Gambling Awareness Week campaign, a grassroots public awareness and outreach campaign. It will be held March 7-13, 2010.

Research finds that 2%-3% of the US population will have a gambling problem in any given year. That’s 6 million to 9 million Americans yet only a small fraction seek out services, such as treatment and self-help recovery programs.

DCGP has scheduled numerous activities during that week to educate the general public and health care professionals about the warning signs of problem gambling and raise awareness that problem gambling is treatable. Listed below are some, but not all, of the activities we have planned.

Our staff members will have information tables set up at Delaware Park on Mon. March 8, at Harrington Raceway on Wed. March 10 and at Dover Downs on Friday March 12, 2010.
Information  will also be available at the Division of Motor Vehicles in New Castle and Wilmington, at Connections Treatment Center, Gaudenzia (Fresh Start) and Brandywine Counseling.

A media competition has been set up at the University of Delaware to allow University students to submit projects regarding gambling addiction. Prizes will be awarded for the for the best projects.

In coordination with the Wellness Center at U of D, a  table top presentation will also be set up at the Perkins Center.

In Sussex County at Del Tech ( Owens Campus in Georgetown ) on March 10 there will be an information table outside the bookstore.

Keep your eyes open for our information stickers on the News Journal and for interviews with staff members on the Hazel Plant Show on Channel 28 and the Shannon Harris show on Channel 22, as well as on the John Watson Show, on radio 1450 AM.  These brief information pieces on TV will be run multiple times on a rotating basis.
